Sibiu - Corvini Castle - Alba Iulia
Let's explore together the Transylvanian patrimony!

Transylvania is Romania’s best-known region, home to numerous historic sites and natural areas that delight visitors from all over the world. Particularly known for the Dracula legends, Transylvania is, nevertheless, a beautiful geographical area with stunning architectural monuments, among them the Corvini Castle – the living legend of Transylvania.

The American publication The Huffington Post made a list of story palaces. The list is open by the Corvini Castle, in Romania:
1. Corvini Castle, Hunedoara, Romania
2. Neuschwanstein Castle, Germany
3. Eltz Castle, Germany
4. Lichtenstein Castle in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany
5. Bodiam Castle, Sussex, Great Britain

Built in the 15th century in Gothic-Renaissance, the Corvini Castle in Hunedoara is one of the best preserved medieval castles in Europe. The recently restored castle will take us through a lovely journey in the past, in the medieval Transylvania.

In Alba Iulia we’ll have a walk along the route of the three fortifications. It is a place with more than 2000 years history, amazing architecture and many stories to reveal.

Overall, this is a day trip during which we’ll go deeper into Transylvania’s history and landscape. To those who are curious about our pre-medieval history we suggest an extra visit to the Dacian-Roman ruins of Sarmizegetusa Regia and Sarmizegetusa Ulpia Traiana.

What to Expect

Let’s start our Sibiu – Corvini Castle – Alba Iulia journey!

We’ll enjoy the spectacular view of the castle, the imposing bridge and the water moat. Inside the castle we’ll visit most of the rooms, towers, bastions, the terrace with its water well and bear pit, the throne room, even the prison and the torture room.

The castle has an amazing history with lots of great gossips and legends to reveal. No wonder the imposing structure has attracted so many film makers. Therefore, great Hollywood productions were shot here (The Nun, Dragon Heart, Ghost Rider) together with endless documentaries, commercials and little productions.

In 2021, I joined some vloggers from USA on their show at the castle to check whether it is haunted by a ghost (as some people say) or not. What was the result of their research? Well, we’ll talk about here, during our visit :).

The next visit of the day is Alba Iulia, one of the oldest settlements on the territory of Transylvania and Romania today. With 2.000 years of history, this place is like an adventure book with many chapters: the Dacians, the Roman Legion and the Castrum, the medieval fortress, the Vauban construction of Charles VI, the Hapsburg Emperor, the union place, the coronation place… There seems to be a lot of stories but we’ll enjoy them all in a fun and relaxing way.

During our walking tour in Alba Iulia we’ll visit the Roman Catholic church, the Union Hall and the Orthodox Church (also know as the Coronation Cathedral as King Ferdinand of Romania and Queen Maria were crowned here).

  • Visit at the Corvini Castle
  • Lunch/ coffee break (optional*)
  • Sightseeing Tour in Alba Iulia

Optional, extra visits

Corvini Castle and Alba Iulia are the basic visits we suggest but, apart from the two, in the region there are several other important historical sites we can explore. Among them, we suggest:

  • The ruins from Sarmizegetusa Regia (former military, religious and political center of the Dacians, before the Roman wars)
  • The ruins from Sarmizegetusa Ulpia Traiana (former capital of the Roman Dacia)
  • Saint Nicolas Densus Church  – an amazing stone church from the 12-13th century
  • The medieval fortress from Deva, built in the 13th century, recently restored
  • The Romanesque fortress in Calnic, UNESCO heritage since 1999.

We can tailor the tour according to your wish. We either add one of these sites to our Corvini Castle – Alba Iulia itinerary or we customize it depending on your visit preferences. Let us know what you want to visit and we’re happy to create a new itinerary!
