Lunch at the Shepherd’s Cabin

Back to nature. Farm-to-table experience.

Not far from Sibiu, at the bottom of the Carpathians, lays a picturesque area with idyllic villages, valleys, pastures, forests and fresh springs. A trip in this area is like a wonderful dream that stays in your heart forever. Beyond the enchanting landscape, you’ll be fascinated by the wonderful local people and their stories.

The inhabitants lived hard times, but they were wise and hardworking. Breeding animals (especially large flocks of sheep and cattle) has always been their main occupation. They were also skilled craftsmen… Even today, some of them keep preserving these customs and are always content to share their secrets.

We invite you to a short and relaxing trekking tour in this area with a visit at a traditional sheepfold. We’ll meet the shepherd himself and listen to his amazing life stories and adventures up in the mountains.

When talking about food in this area, there’s a lot to say! We’ll try some local products based on meat and cheese, all prepared and cooked at the sheepfold. That will be a delicious experience!

In this area every day means a new experience, a new reason of joy and peacefulness, a perfect occasion to recharge your batteries far from the noisy world!

First, we’ll have a visit at the fortress in Cisnadioara – one of the oldest in Transylvania, built in the 12th century. We’ll enjoy the beautiful view of the village and the mountain areas around, we’ll learn more about the region and the life of the Saxon community.

Enjoy a few hours in the countryside, in the mountains, while having a delicious local lunch in an orchard. We’ll meet our guest, the shepherd and his family and we’ll learn more about life in the mountains.

Our main challenge is to offer you only local products: different types of cheese made by the shepherd, local meat products, fresh vegetables and, of course, the famous polenta cheese balls – a sort of traditional Romanian cheeseburger:)

This visit is an amazing experience of senses: you can smell the fresh grass and hay, the wild flowers scent, you can enjoy the picturesque view of the village and of the mountains, you can hear the noise of the locals at work and you can taste a lovely meal in a nice company. History and Culture Collide Our groups of six (called Let'sRomania) visited Sibiu in Sept 2018. Adela booked visit to rural Sibiu for a fantastic delicious lunch prepared by a local shepherd with all fresh local foods -- unbelievable fun. We stopped and watched a shepherd herd and milk his 300 sheep on the way back to Sibiu. She was not in a rush so we just relaxed on the hillside and soaked in fresh air, eating apples from the trees, and enjoying scenery that most people don't take time to notice. Adela coordinated every detail for us. The next day she gave us a walking tour of Sibiu --- thorough yet easy for an American to understand :) And from history we talked about her parents role in the 1989 Revolution and now her thoughts on the current political climate in Romania. Several in our group said the time in Sibiu was the highlight of our 11 days in Romania.
