Trekking in the Carpathians

Sibiu lies in the South Eastern part of Transylvania at the bottom of the Carpathians. In the area of Sibiu there are two different mountain rows: Cindrel Mountains and Fagaras Mountains.

Trekking tours in Cindrel

At about 32 km from Sibiu there is the highest ski resort in Romania, Paltinis. Located at about 1425m altitude, Paltinis is famous for its fresh and pure air.

From here, we can start different trekking tours in Cindrel Mountains. The tours may vary from 2 to 9 hours. We can visit the Natural Reservation Iezerele Cindrelului, two beautiful glacial lakes; we can visit a traditional sheepfold in the mountains and have a picnic on the peak of the mountains.

At the end of the day, our trip can end up with a huge campfire, barbeque and many local stories and legends about these places…

Trekking in Fagaras

The Fagaras Mountains with Balea Waterfalls and Balea Lake are located at 80 km from Sibiu. The Transfagarasan Road takes us to 2300m altitude and it goes on the other side of the mountains making the connection with Muntenia.

This is the highest road in Romania located in a breathtaking wild landscape. It was built at the order of Ceausescu with many life sacrifices…but that’s another story we shall learn about there.

At Balea we can visit the Balea glacial lake and Capra glacial lake; we shall do some short trekking trips and admire the highest peaks in the Romanian Carpathians.

From Balea Lake we may continue our way, pass the Transfagarasan Tunnel and reach the other side of the mountains. By the way, did you know that last summer Top Gear filmed here? You shall find out why….

P.S.: Don't forget your camera!
