Wine Tasting Tour
Sibiu – the Wine Road Story
Did you know that Transylvania was part of the Wine Road and it was famous for its white wine? The story of the Transylvanian wine goes way back in time, during the Saxon times when the hilly areas of Sibiu and Alba were covered with vineyards and wineries. At lunch we’ll go to Gogardin, the only local vineyard still left in our region. We’ll learn about their family story, the wine production in Transylvania, we’ll visit the vineyard and we’ll have an amazing lunch while tasting different types of wine.
The Saxon colonists and the Cistercian Monks were the first ones who, officially, brought this craft in South Transylvania. Soon they realized that this was a good area, with sun exposure and fertile ground, perfect for white grapes. In our area, centuries ago, wine was even a currency, very important for trading. The hills were full with terraces with vineyards, the barrels were full with the magic liquor.
World War II, Communism, the deportation of the Saxons and the forced industrialisation led to lots of changes, including demographic ones, so many of these vineyards were abandoned.
We suggest you a visit at the only local producer in our area; it’s a family business story, it’s about how, after many years, this craft was launched again in Sibiu. The vineyard has a surface of about 62 ha and they harvest five types of wine: Sauvignon Blanc, Traminer Aromatico, Pinot Grigio, Riesling Italian and Muscat Ottonel. We’ll have a walk through the vineyard, talk about the story of this family, the story of the wine in the region and, of course, we’ll enjoy a delicious local meal with various types of white wine and a sparkling wine. Lucky you, sorry for the guide 🙂
It will be an unforgettable day!
The tour may include:
- A visit at the vineyard and wine tasting
- A walking tour in Sibiu or in Alba Iulia
- Any visit in one of the sites around: Cristian fortified church/ Calnic UNESCO fortress

Before enjoying a walk in the vineyard and savouring the delicious meal and the different types of wine, we suggest you a local visit in the area. There are several choices, it depends on your interest.

We’ll have, first, a cultural visit and then go to Gogardin vineyard (at about 30 minutes from Sibiu). We’ll spend a nice after-noon in the area.
