A Stunning Medieval Castle
When you think of Transylvania, you imagine an idyllic, picturesque place, hidden behind the Carpathians with villages and old towns spread between valleys and woody hills. But Transylvania was always in the way of the enemies, an entrance gate in Europe. Today, it is famous due to its wonderful medieval castles and fortresses.
Corvini Castle is one of most stunning medieval castles in Europe, built in the 15th century. Built in a Renaissance-Gothic style and constructed over the site of an older fortification on a rock, the castle is a large and imposing structure with tall towers, bulwarks, an inner courtyard, coloured roof and a myriad windows and balconies adorned with stone carvings. The castle is sometimes mentioned as a source of inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula Castle. It was also a source of inspiration for film companies as, recently, they shot here the famous Dragon Heart and The Nun.
Alba Iulia is like an open book and each chapter represents a new, fascinating story. It used to be a former Roman citadel, a medieval fortress, an Austro-Hunagrian Vauban citadel but also the place where Transylvania got united with Romania in 1918.
It is a beautifully restored old fortress with amazing sights to discover.
The standard tour includes:

Alba Iulia Fortress
Alba Iulia has a history of more than two thousand years… In the beginning, there used to be a Roman fortification but, over it, colonists built a medieval fortification and in the 18th century, the Austro-Hungarian authorities built here a big Vauban fortification.
Alba Iulia is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing stroll, admire the former fortification, the old Catholic Church, the Union Hall, the main square and the Roman ruins.
- Location 3 Deva fortress, Sarmizegetusa, Calnic fortress
This is quite a long tour so we suggest to start early in the morning. The focus of the tour is the Corvini Castle and, usually, the fortress of Alba Iulia. If we get there at noon, in summer-time, we can also watch the changing guards.
Optional, to our basic tour, we can add an extra visit. If interested, you have several interesting choices:
- Sarmizegetusa Ulpia Traiana: former Dacian citadel and Roman capital – amazing archaeological site that still preserves very well parts of the ancient settlement.
- Deva fortress: the restored ruins of one of the best fortified citadels in Transylvania – the view from above the walls is incredible!
- Calnic fortified church: a former Hungarian dwelling, fortified and surrounded by strong walls and towers becoming, thus, a safe place for the settlers to hide during the sieges. Today, it is a UNESCO heritage monument.
