Bear Sanctuary and Countryside
New York Times wrote about a mythical Transylvania with medieval buildings well preserved over the centuries; The Toronto Star described Transylvania as a charming land; The Telegraph describes it as “the land beyond the forests”; Le Figaro called it the “living heart of Europe”. Prince Charles of Wales himself often comes here to enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Saxon villages.
This tour suggests an amazing experience outdoors, enjoying the wilderness of the Carpathian mountains.
LiBEARty Sanctuary is the biggest and most important bear sanctuary in South-East Europe. The sanctuary hosts about 100 bears on more than 70 hectares of oak and hazel forests, above the Transylvanian town of Zarnesti. Here, the bears climb trees, swim in pools and forage of the vegetation. For many of them, having been caught from the wild as cubs, this is a new and stimulating experience. Thus, you’ll have the chance to watch them in their natural habitat.
We also suggest a nice, relaxing walking/ hiking tour in the area of the gorges Zarnesti and the mountain villages Măgura and Peştera. If you don’t want to spend too much time trekking, we have the option of visiting the Bran Castle, in the neighbourhood town.
It will be a perfect tour combining wildlife stories, trekking, beautiful views and local life.
The tour includes:
- The visit at the Bear Sanctuary;
- A hiking tour in the area of the gorges Zarnesti and the mountain village Magura;
- As an option to the hiking tour you can choose the visit of the Bran Castle, Zarnesti fortress or a walking tour in Brasov.
- The tickets for the Bear Sanctuary are not included in the quote of our tour – there are only three entrances/ day and the number of participants in each group is limited. Hence, we suggest you to buy in advance the tickets online. Remember, this is a bear sanctuary, they are kept and treated as in the wilderness, this is not a zoo! The tickets can be booked here: LiBearty Sanctuary Ticktes
The Bear Sanctuary
“LIBEARTY” – the largest animal welfare project in Europe
The story of the bear sanctuary begins in 2005, when the Millions of Friends Association received a 49 years concession for the necessary land to build the “Libearty” sanctuary.
World Animal Protection joined these efforts in the “Save the Captive Bear” Project – the largest project in Europe for the rescue, care and welfare of the brown bear.
116 bears have been rescued from an abusive nightmare life, being prisoners behind rusty bars and cement under their paws, instead of grass.
Until they arrived to the sanctuary, some of them didn’t even know what it was like to climb a tree, to hide from the sun in the hot days, or to enjoy a bath. Many of them were kept in cages near restaurants, hotels, guesthouses, near cottages and gas stations, playing the role of performers for tourists.
The visit at the bear sanctuary will be revealing, we’ll learn so many interesting things about the brown bears and wildlife in general.
- Location 2 Trekking Tour
This is a tailor-made/ customized tour; it is flexible so, if you want to choose a specific attraction, please contact us. We can set together the itinerary and the details. The main focus is, though, wildlife and the story of the sheltered bears. It is also a lesson for us all – a lesson about humanity, respect, the role of the environment, the role of the eco-system.
All travellers are welcome but we’d be even happier to join children and families – it is the perfect tour for an environment awareness lesson.
You can customize the tour as you wish… Our suggestion is a pleasant after-noon in the countryside 🙂
Yes, this is a private tour – we can tailor it according to your interests.
Yes, especially for children interested in wildlife. We can go for an easy trekking, not too challenging.
